More than just a sauna, we invite to the world of sauna rituals and Aufguss

Welcome to the sauna at Serra Vida, home to one of Portugal's largest wood-fired saunas.

Designed by Studio Max in Lisbon, our handcrafted sauna accommodates 30–50 guests and offers immersive sauna rituals inspired by traditions from around the world.
Whether you're staying at our retreat or visiting as a day guest, you're invited to experience authentic sauna culture in the peaceful hills of central Portugal. Our sauna ceremonies include traditional Aufguss, Russian banya rituals with fresh birch whisks (venik), naturally scented water infusions, guided breathwork, and moments of deep relaxation. Every ritual is thoughtfully created to promote wellbeing, connection, and restoration.
More than just a sauna session, Serra Vida offers an experience rooted in warmth, nature, and genuine hospitality. Set beside our outdoor pool and surrounded by the landscape of rural Portugal, each gathering combines the restorative power of heat, cold water, fresh air, and community.
Once a week, we open our sauna to the public, welcoming both retreat guests and independent travellers looking for an unforgettable wellness experience in Portugal. Whether you're exploring central Portugal, seeking an authentic wood-fired sauna, or searching for world-class sauna rituals, Serra Vida offers a unique place to slow down, reconnect, and feel at home.
Join us for an evening of heat, water, nature, and community—and discover why Serra Vida has become a destination for sauna lovers from around the world.

What is Aufguss?

Aufguss (German for "infusion") is a traditional sauna ritual originating in Central Europe that transforms a sauna session into a guided sensory experience. During an Aufguss ceremony, a trained sauna master pours water infused with natural essential oils onto the hot stones, creating waves of fragrant steam. Using towels or fans, the heat is skillfully circulated throughout the sauna, producing alternating moments of intensity and calm.
At Serra Vida, our Aufguss rituals are inspired by the traditions of Germany, Austria, and Scandinavia, while bringing our own creative and heartfelt approach. Every session is carefully choreographed with natural aromas, music, breath, and intention, creating a journey that invigorates the body, calms the mind, and leaves guests feeling deeply refreshed.

What happens during a Banya ritual?

What is a Banya Ritual?
The Russian Banya is one of the world's oldest sauna traditions, centred around deep heat, cooling, and gentle massage with fresh birch branches known as venik. During the ritual, warm birch whisks are used to lightly brush, tap, and fan the body, stimulating circulation, opening the pores, and releasing muscle tension while filling the sauna with the fresh scent of the forest.
Our Banya rituals honour these centuries-old traditions while embracing the peaceful atmosphere of Serra Vida. Combined with wood-fired heat, cold water immersion, fresh air, and moments of rest, the experience becomes a powerful practice of renewal, connection, and wellbeing.
Whether you join an Aufguss ceremony or a Banya ritual, every gathering at Serra Vida is designed to offer more than heat alone. It is an invitation to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and share an authentic sauna experience in presence and togetherness.

We host sauna retreats and special events celebrating sauna culture.

Each week, we host sauna nights with themed sauna rituals which are open to the public.
